United Airways debuted Starlink Wi-Fi on its first passenger flight to Detroit, marking a milestone in in-flight connectivity with SpaceX’s satellite tv for pc web.

On Thursday, the morning flight from Chicago’s O’Hare Worldwide Airport launched high-speed, gate-to-gate Starlink web for United Airways passengers. The Starlink-equipped United Embraer E-175, tail quantity UA5717, departed at 7:35 a.m. for Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

United introduced the rollout on X, stating, “That lightning-fast Wi-Fi we advised you about? It’s right here. Our first prospects simply discovered what it’s like to interrupt the Wi-Fi barrier and stream, scroll, store, and recreation similar to at house with Starlink. And it’s FREE for MileagePlus members. Rolling out throughout our fleet now.”

The service leverages Starlink’s 7,000+ low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to ship broadband globally, together with in distant areas. United is the one main U.S. airline at the moment providing Starlink. The airline plans to broaden the service throughout its two-cabin regional fleet and introduce it on mainline flights by year-end.

Sean Cudahy from The Factors Man examined Starlink’s Wi-Fi pre-launch, praising its ease and reliability. “I ran a velocity check, and it clocked the Wi-Fi at 217 Mbps of obtain velocity, and 26.8 Mbps of add velocity,” Cudahy shared, noting its suitability for lengthy flights.

Past aviation, SpaceX is pitching Starlink as a GPS different, emphasizing its potential for Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) providers. This twin functionality underscores Starlink’s versatility.

In a letter to the FCC, SpaceX wrote, “One alternative stands out as a very ripe, low-hanging fruit: facilitating the fast deployment of next-generation low-Earth orbit (‘LEO’) satellite tv for pc constellations that may ship PNT as a service alongside high-speed, low-latency broadband and ubiquitous cell connectivity.”

As SpaceX expands Starlink’s functions, from aviation to navigation, United’s adoption alerts a broader shift towards satellite-driven connectivity on lengthy flights. With plans to equip extra plane, United and Starlink are redefining in-flight web, promising seamless digital entry at 30,000 toes.
