Tobias Otieno, a former auditor with the Workplace of the New York State Comptroller, was arraigned on costs of second diploma grand larceny as a public corruption crime. Between June 2022 and September 2024, Otieno was assigned to audit the city of Wallkill’s funds. Throughout this time, officers say Otieno used his entry to the city’s financial institution accounts and monetary paperwork to switch $405,843.25 to enterprise accounts he personally owned. The theft was uncovered by the Orange County White Collar Crimes Taskforce, a division of the district lawyer’s workplace, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Workplace, with assist from forensic auditors with the state comptroller’s workplace, Otieno’s employer. Otieno, who was terminated from his place, pleaded not responsible.
