The primary vote of the conclave – the secretive course of to decide on a brand new pope – has failed to achieve a call.

After a prolonged wait, black smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney at round 9pm native time – that means the 133 cardinals inside haven’t been in a position to decide on a brand new pontiff.

Crowds have been gathered of their tens of hundreds in St Peter’s Sq. for the primary vote of conclave – the outcomes of which took greater than two hours to announce.

Cardinals will return tomorrow to a closed-door Sistine Chapel for extra rounds of voting.

The BBC’s Laura Gozzi was in Vatican Metropolis all day alongside the ready crowds.
